Cock-a-doodle-doo!
Another day dawned on Brownhill Farm
Erik the rooster called his alarm,
“Cock-a-doodle-doo! Awaken, dear fellows!”
The grumblers groaned, "Enough with the bellows!"
Next day’s bright sun rose over the farm,
Erik cried, “Cock-a-doodle-doo!” with charm,
All were woken, far and near,
Once again only groans met his ear.
“Go away, Erik!” the horses cried.
“Be quiet, Erik!” the cats replied.
The poor old rooster bowed his head,
His job was raising them from bed
Erik the rooster, a cunning old bird,
Was fed up with grumbles he'd always heard.
Too curious to let it rest,
He planned a trick for the next day’s quest.
The next day dawned, all calm and quiet.
Still lay the farm as morning slipped by it.
“Zzzzzzzzzz…” they slept till noon,
Dreaming the morning away too soon.
The chickens clucked first, then the horses brayed,
“Oh no! We’ve overslept!” they said dismayed.
“Where’s Erik?” cried the weary crew,
But Erik was gone, with not a clue.
Deedee the chick took charge that day,
The hens all followed without delay.
“Oh, Erik, you rascal! Where could you be?”
The dogs will sniff you out... You’ll see!
Samson and Dart were snoring deep,
Dreaming of sticks in their sleepy keep.
“Wake up! Erik’s missing!” they cried.
Once awake their sniffers searched wide.
They came to Horace, the pig so round,
His twinkling eyes were mischief bound.
“For an apple!” he snorted, “I’ll tell, nothing less.”
So off to the stables he went with the rest.
Deedee clucked, “Any apples, please, Celine!”
The horse neighed, “No, Farmer Henry’s not been!
Though, for some sugar, I could make one appear.”
"For sugar? Sure thing! Please tell me where, dear.
“Through the gate,” said Celine, “and follow the lane!
Inside the house, past the window pane.”
"In there" said Celine, "on the farmer’s tea tray!"
Deedee spied the bowl was stacked high today.
The farmer’s wife was quite unaware,
Till fluttering feathers filled the air.
“Eeeeeek!” she shrieked in sudden fright,
Chaos followed left and right!
Chickens flapped and dogs barked loud,
Whoosh! - The donkey's kick sent bucket to cloud.
“Moooo!” said Daisy as the bucket tumbled,
Clattering upon the bull's field it rumbled.
The startled bull charged, goats bleating in line,
The goose honked madly... what a time!
“What's going on here!?” they heard from the side,
Perched on a fence, Erik laughed till he cried.
From that day on, the animals knew,
That Erik’s special call rang true.
Each day dawn's greeting blared anew,
With praise all sang “Cock-a-doodle-doo!”
